Traditional herb consecration on August 15, 2026, in Trier Cathedral — Feast of the Assumption
The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven on August 15 is one of the oldest and most important Marian feasts in the Catholic Church. In Trier, a predominantly Catholic city and the seat of the Diocese of Trier, the day is celebrated with a festive Pontifical Mass in the Trier Cathedral, the oldest bishop's church in Germany.
A special feature of the feast is the herb consecration: the faithful bring bouquets of local herbs, medicinal plants, and flowers — the so-called “Würzbüschel,” “Kräuterbuschen,” or “Frauendreißiger-Sträuße.” Traditionally, they contain seven, nine, twelve, or more herbs — often including St. John's wort, yarrow, mugwort, sage, wormwood, centaury, southernwood, and mullein. After the Eucharist, the celebrant blesses the brought bouquets. They are then kept in homes — as a sign of blessing and, according to old folk belief, also as protection.
This custom combines Christian liturgy with popular nature worship and dates back to the early Middle Ages. It is particularly alive in the German-speaking world, especially in the Catholic south and west — Trier, with its unbroken Catholic tradition since late antiquity, cultivates it with particular care.
In the festive year 2026 — 40 Years of UNESCO World Heritage Trier — the Feast of the Assumption celebration in the World Heritage Cathedral will receive special attention. The Trier Cathedral, as a World Heritage site and a living church, exemplifies the connection between cultural heritage and lived spirituality. Free admission.
The 2026 edition is part of the 40 Years of UNESCO World Heritage celebration and showcases the vibrant spirituality that continues to shape the ancient World Heritage site.
The herb consecration is a popular program highlight — families from Trier and the surrounding region come to the Cathedral with their own bouquets.
