Spring market in the historic town center with Sunday shopping, spring café, and children's program
For years, the Ludwigsstadt Spring Market has been the traditional season opener for the small Franconian Forest town in the Upper Franconian district of Kronach. On a Sunday in May, the market square, the town hall, and the shopping street along the B85 fill with market stalls, spring flowers, regional specialties, and creative offerings – in addition, local shops open for Sunday shopping.
The range of goods extends from spring decorations, handmade crafts, and plants to regional Franconian Forest food, fashion, and gift ideas. A dedicated 'Creativ&LECKER' (Creative&DELICIOUS) area in the market square brings together direct marketers and hobby creatives from the region.
A Ludwigsstadt specialty: the Spring Café in the historic town hall, where TSV 1883 Ludwigsstadt e.V. creates a cozy atmosphere with homemade cakes and coffee. In the gourmet corner on the market square, the Lauenstein festival club serves fresh burgers and the Lauenstein volunteer fire department offers cool drinks.
From midday, the market becomes a family paradise. The bouncy castle, a craft corner, glitter tattoos, face painting, and balloon modeling provide entertainment. A Hazelnut Experience Trail leads through the town center from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. – an interactive circular route that playfully informs about the importance of the hazelnut in the region. In the Marienkapelle, the traditional 'Spring Awakening' is performed, a musical and meditative event.
From the afternoon onwards, live music plays in the gourmet corner – in previous years, for example, soul and blues musicians. Those who prefer nature can join a guided herb walk with a regional herbalist and learn more about the wild flora of the Franconian Forest.
Ludwigsstadt is located on the northern edge of the Franconian Forest, on the border with Thuringia and on the Rennsteig trail. With around 3,200 inhabitants, the Spring Market remains a manageable, community-based festival – supported by the local sports club (TSV), the Lauenstein festival club, the fire department, and the city administration. It is precisely this familiar atmosphere that makes the market so appealing.
The 2026 edition takes place on Sunday, May 10, in the historic town center of Ludwigsstadt. Exhibitors line the market square, the town hall, and the shopping street along the B85.
