About Lichtspiele Schloss Gifhorn

The Lichtspiele special exhibition at the Historic Museum Schloss Gifhorn is one of the most ambitious cultural events in the Gifhorn district in 2026. From April 28 to August 23, 2026, the interactive exhibition will transport visitors into the world of light – as a physical phenomenon, an artistic design element, and a sensory experience. Eleven hands-on stations allow children aged five and up, as well as adults, to playfully understand complex optical phenomena: reflection, refraction, color spectrum, shadow casting, holography, and light art. In the historic ambiance of the 16th-century Renaissance castle Schloss Gifhorn, the exhibition becomes an experience for the whole family.

Light as a Theme – Science and Art

Light is one of the most fascinating phenomena of our perception. It is the prerequisite for sight, the basis of numerous physical laws, and a central design element in visual art. The Lichtspiele special exhibition uses this diversity to bring visitors of all ages into contact with light. Scientific findings and aesthetic experiences are given equal weight.

Eleven Interactive Stations

The heart of the exhibition consists of eleven hands-on stations that illuminate the theme from various perspectives. Visitors experiment with light spectra and color mixing, observe light refraction in prisms, experience optical illusions and reflections, discover shadow art and shadow theater, and see holograms and light installations. Each station is designed so that children aged five and up can explore the phenomena independently or with minimal help from accompanying persons.

Schloss Gifhorn as a Backdrop

The Historic Museum Schloss Gifhorn is located in the 16th-century Renaissance castle, built by Duke Franz of Brunswick-Lüneburg starting in 1525. The historic rooms provide an extraordinary backdrop for the exhibition. The contrast between the centuries-old walls and the state-of-the-art light installations creates a special atmosphere that enhances the experience.

Accompanying Program

During the exhibition period, the museum offers a diverse accompanying program: workshops for school classes and families, lectures on scientific and art historical aspects of light, guided tours, occasional theme evenings, and special events. The exhibition is particularly recommended for school and group visits.

Lichtspiele Schloss Gifhorn — edition 2026

The Lichtspiele 2026 special exhibition runs at the Historic Museum Schloss Gifhorn from April 28 to August 23. For four months, visitors can playfully explore the world of light through eleven hands-on stations: reflection, refraction, color spectrum, shadow casting, holography, and light art become tangible for children aged five and up, as well as adults. The historic ambiance of the 16th-century Renaissance castle provides a unique setting. An accompanying program with workshops, lectures, and guided tours complements the exhibition.

The exhibition is specifically designed for a multi-generational audience. Children playfully learn basic optical phenomena, while adults discover scientific and art historical backgrounds. The hands-on stations allow for independent, experimentation-oriented experiences.

School and family groups particularly benefit from the exhibition. The museum offers bookable workshops and guided tours where the content can be explored in greater depth with pedagogical support. Special family activities are included in the program during school holidays.
