Elgendorf — A District with Identity

The Elgendorf district belongs to the town of Montabaur in the Westerwaldkreis. Like many Westerwald districts, Elgendorf maintains its own distinct village identity, with its own clubs, its own festivals, and close neighbourly ties. The Kirmes is one of the most important social events of the year.

Westerwald Kirmes Tradition

The Westerwald Kirmes (also called "Wäller Kirmes") follows a proven pattern: erection of a Kirmes tree, festive opening with tapping of the first barrel, music program in the festival tent or local inns, carousels and small rides, festive Sunday morning pint, often also a Kirmes church service and a traditional Kirmes parade. The Elgendorf Kirmes integrates these elements over the four days of the Pentecost weekend.

Pentecost Weekend as the Date

The choice of the Pentecost weekend is clever: the long public holiday turns the Kirmes into a four-day festival, giving many visitors time and allowing former Elgendorf residents to return to their hometown. The mostly summery temperatures at the end of May create a special festive atmosphere.

Club Life at the Centre

The Elgendorf clubs are at the heart of the Kirmes — the fire brigade, sports clubs, carnival club, music band. They take care of catering, organise program items, and design floats for any parades. Thus, the proceeds of the Kirmes flow directly back into village life and finance club activities, youth work, and community projects.
