Traditional district Kirmes in Montabaur over four days at the end of May in the Westerwaldkreis
The Kirmes Montabaur-Elgendorf is a traditional district Kirmes in the Westerwald town of Montabaur. Unlike the large city centre Kirmes in summer, the Elgendorf Kirmes is a more manageable, village-style festival that focuses on the district's identity and club life.
In 2026, the Kirmes Elgendorf will run from Friday, May 22nd to Monday, May 25th (Pentecost weekend). For four days, neighbours will meet, relatives and friends will come, and carousels, catering, and the traditional club program will ensure a festive atmosphere in the district.
The Elgendorf district belongs to the town of Montabaur in the Westerwaldkreis. Like many Westerwald districts, Elgendorf maintains its own distinct village identity, with its own clubs, its own festivals, and close neighbourly ties. The Kirmes is one of the most important social events of the year.
The Westerwald Kirmes (also called "Wäller Kirmes") follows a proven pattern: erection of a Kirmes tree, festive opening with tapping of the first barrel, music program in the festival tent or local inns, carousels and small rides, festive Sunday morning pint, often also a Kirmes church service and a traditional Kirmes parade. The Elgendorf Kirmes integrates these elements over the four days of the Pentecost weekend.
The choice of the Pentecost weekend is clever: the long public holiday turns the Kirmes into a four-day festival, giving many visitors time and allowing former Elgendorf residents to return to their hometown. The mostly summery temperatures at the end of May create a special festive atmosphere.
The Elgendorf clubs are at the heart of the Kirmes — the fire brigade, sports clubs, carnival club, music band. They take care of catering, organise program items, and design floats for any parades. Thus, the proceeds of the Kirmes flow directly back into village life and finance club activities, youth work, and community projects.
The Kirmes Montabaur-Elgendorf 2026 will take place from Friday, May 22nd to Monday, May 25th, on the Pentecost weekend. For four days, neighbours will gather in the Elgendorf district for carousels, food and drink, and the traditional club program. The Kirmes is a charming, more manageable alternative to the large city centre Kirmes of Montabaur in the summer.
The exact program for 2026 will be published in due course by the Elgendorf local council and participating clubs. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of Westerwald Kirmes tradition.
