Traditional spring Volksfest (funfair) around Fürstenau Castle in the northern Osnabrück district
The Kirmes Fürstenau is a fixed date in the event calendar of the town of Fürstenau and annually heralds the festival season in the northern Osnabrück district. The Volksfest has its roots in the town's centuries-old market rights and is now held as a modern showman's festival with carousels, food stalls, and game stands around the Schlosspromenade and the adjacent Pferdemarkt. The central location in the middle of the old town ensures that the Kirmes attracts not only families from Fürstenau itself but also visitors from the surrounding communities of Berge, Bippen, and Merzen.
Classic rides such as the chain carousel, dodgems, and children's carousel characterise the festival grounds. In addition, there are lottery stalls, shooting galleries, and throwing games to participate in. For refreshments, traditional food stalls offer bratwurst, fries, Schmalzkuchen (traditional doughnuts), candied almonds, and cotton candy. A well-stocked drinks stand with draft beer, mulled wine on cool evenings, and soft drinks invites visitors to linger. The evening illumination of the Schlosspromenade, accompanied by the background glow of Fürstenau Castle, is one of the most photogenic moments of the festival.
The Kirmes Fürstenau is organised by the city administration in close coordination with the local showmen's association and is part of a vibrant annual event programme, which also includes the Fürstenau Christmas Market, the annual Schützenfest (marksmen's festival), and various castle concerts. Visitors can combine their trip with a walk through the historic old town, a visit to Fürstenau Castle, or a bike tour through the hilly landscape of the northern Osnabrück district.
From Saturday to Monday, the Kirmes Fürstenau opens its gates. The festival traditionally begins on Saturday afternoon, as soon as the showmen have completed their setups. Sunday is considered Family Day with a particularly busy festival site, while Monday offers a relaxed conclusion with reduced prices on some carousels. The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the organiser in the spring.
Rides ranging from the chain carousel and dodgems to children's carousels are expected, complemented by a wide range of throwing, shooting, and lottery stalls. Traditional regional food stalls cater to culinary delights.
The detailed programme for 2026 will be published by the organiser in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: showmen, carousels, food stalls, and pleasant gatherings against the backdrop of Fürstenau Castle.
