27th edition – an afternoon for children in the old town with the motto Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
Since 1999, the Kinderaltstadtfest has been the central family event in Kaiserslautern's autumn calendar. While the large Altstadtfest in July, with its stage program and medieval market, attracts a broad audience of all generations, the Kinderaltstadtfest is specifically tailored for children and their families. The old town becomes a stage for hands-on activities, craft stations, small concerts, theater performances for young audiences, and games, complemented by information booths from social and educational institutions.
Each edition is held under a thematic focus, jointly determined by the three organizing bodies. In 2026, the choice falls on Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: the right of children to freely express their opinion on all matters affecting them and to be heard. This theme runs through the hands-on activities and stage programs: children are actively invited to articulate their opinions, whether about the city, school, family, or societal issues that concern them.
Classic components include craft stations with materials for self-creation, game courses, interactive theater formats, face painting, music stages with child-friendly programs (singer-songwriters, interactive bands), reading corners, and stations for trying out professions or themes. Sports clubs and aid organizations are also regularly represented with activities, from a Bambini boxing station to first-aid training for children.
The sponsorship by the City of Kaiserslautern, the Kinderschutzbund Ortsverband Kaiserslautern, and SOS-Kinderdorf makes the festival an expression of the city's child policy and the work of these central social institutions. The festival is free of charge and intentionally designed to be accessible: it is aimed at all children and families in the city, regardless of social background or origin.
