Two carnival parades on Thursday and Shrove Tuesday in Mülheim-Kärlich
Rhenish Fastnacht has a long and cherished tradition in Mülheim-Kärlich. The town in the Mayen-Koblenz district, located on the Rhine between Koblenz and Andernach, is organising two parades in 2026 on special days of the carnival season with its carnival clubs: on Schwerdonnerstag (Carnival Thursday, February 12th) and Veilchendienstag (Shrove Tuesday, February 17th).
The Thursday parade, traditionally opening the street carnival days, particularly brings Weiberfastnacht (Women's Carnival) to life. Veilchendienstag, on the other hand, the day before Ash Wednesday, is one of the season's final highlights in Rhenish tradition before the fifth season ends with the traditional herring meal and the burning of the 'Nubbel' (a straw effigy representing sins).
The parade routes lead through the districts of Mülheim and Kärlich. Floats with political and jester messages, walking groups in imaginative costumes, music clubs, guard dancers, and showgirls form the heart of the parades. As everywhere in the Rhineland, the motto is: three times Helau! Spectators line the streets, catching Kamelle (sweets), Strüßjer (small bouquets), and dancing along. Children come with bags and sacks to collect the thrown sweets.
Mülheim-Kärlich, with its approximately 11,000 inhabitants, is strategically located: the twin town is quickly accessible via the A 61 motorway, and both Koblenz and Andernach are just a few kilometres away. Those who want to experience the full carnival programme in the Mayen-Koblenz district can easily combine the parades in Mülheim-Kärlich with other events in the region – such as the carnival strongholds in Andernach, Koblenz, or Bendorf.
Local clubs organise further events around the parades: gala sessions, costume balls, children's carnival, and Weiberfastnacht parties. Those who want to experience the full spectrum should inform themselves early about the programmes of the individual clubs.
The 2026 carnival parades in Mülheim-Kärlich take place on two central days of the carnival season. The exact route and assembly times will be announced by the organiser in advance. As a rule, the parades start in the early afternoon and run through the city centre for one to two hours.
The parades are accompanied by numerous carnival events in the region: gala sessions starting in January, Weiberfastnacht on February 12th, the traditional Rose Monday parade in Koblenz and Andernach on February 16th.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the organiser in spring 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Detailed route information and schedules will be communicated via the carnival clubs and the local press (BLICK aktuell).
