About Museum Day Worms

On International Museum Day — celebrated annually in mid-May worldwide by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) — Worms museums open their doors free of charge and participate in the world's largest day for promoting museum work. In 2026, Worms will primarily feature the Museum of the City of Worms in the Andreasstift and the traditional Heylshof Museum. Both institutions invite visitors to explore their collections with free admission, complemented by special guided tours, family activities, and previews of new exhibitions — with a special focus in 2026 on the upcoming opening of the permanent exhibition 'World of the Nibelungen Legends'.

The International Museum Day

The International Museum Day has been organized worldwide by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) since 1977 and is celebrated annually in mid-May. In Germany, the German Museums Association coordinates participation; thousands of museums open their doors free of charge or with reduced admission and focus on their collections and educational work.

Worms Museums

In Worms, two institutions are primarily involved: The Museum of the City of Worms in the Andreasstift showcases its collections on city, regional, and cultural history; from summer 2026, it will also feature the new permanent exhibition 'World of the Nibelungen Legends'. The Heylshof Museum — recognized as 'Museum of the Month' in 2026 — presents its collections of paintings, sculptures, and crafts in the historic Heylshof.

Free Admission

On International Museum Day 2026 (Sunday, May 17), admission to both institutions is free. The museum landscape of Worms thus particularly invites families and first-time visitors to spend a day at the Andreasstift, the Heylshof, or both.

Program Offerings

In addition to free admission, special guided tours, educational activities for children, and family programs are offered at the institutions. The exact details will be published in advance on museum-andreasstift.de and heylshof.de.
