Advent Magic in Front of the Peace Town Hall
Few Christmas markets in Germany offer a backdrop like the Historic Christmas Market Osnabrück. The medieval town hall, where part of the Peace of Westphalia was signed in 1648, forms the central background architecture. St. Mary's Church, the Stadtwaage, and the cathedral forecourt group around it to form an atmospheric urban ensemble.
Over 100 Stalls in Four Squares
The four market areas fully occupy the old town of Osnabrück:
- Market Square in front of the town hall — central stage and main stall areas
- Around St. Mary's Church — arts and crafts and culinary stalls
- Stadtwaage building — historic ambiance with craft stalls
- Cathedral forecourt — expanded stall area with light installations
The Original Osnabrück Cheese Bratwurst
Anyone visiting Osnabrück cannot miss a cheese bratwurst. The regional specialty is omnipresent at the Christmas market and is considered a must-try for many. Several stalls offer it in different variations — classic in a roll or with fried potatoes and sauerkraut.
Assortment Focuses
- Arts and Crafts: Ceramics, wood carving, glass, jewelry, lighting
- Advent Decorations: Wreaths, stars, nativity figures, light arches
- Gastronomy: Mulled wine, punch, gingerbread, candied almonds, crêpes
- Regional Specialties: Cheese bratwurst, Pickert, Westphalian dark bread
Stage Program and Atmosphere
On the market square, various choirs, brass choirs, and music groups perform. Santa Claus visits children, and stories are told at a fairy tale station. The lighting — warm light chains between the gables, illuminated Christmas trees — is a trademark of the market.
City of Peace Identity
The market sees itself not just as a sales event but as an staging of the City of Peace. Information boards on the history of the Peace of Westphalia and a deliberately chosen profile without mass commercialization distinguish Osnabrück from many larger markets.
