46th edition of the EXCELLENT Wine Festival Rheinhessen – winemakers and clubs open their courtyards on the second-to-last weekend of August
The Harxheim Hofenfest is one of the oldest and most renowned wine festivals in Rheinhessen. In its now 46th edition, the event looks back on almost half a century of history, which is closely linked to the identity of the wine community of Harxheim. It is traditionally held on the second-to-last weekend of August.
The concept differs fundamentally from most other wine festivals: Instead of a central festival ground with anonymous stalls, the winemakers of the community open their private courtyards to the public. The historic inner courtyards, often with sandstone walls, wrought-iron gates, shady trees, and old wells, become individual festival spaces with their own unique character. The local clubs – sports club, fire department, church communities – also operate stalls in central locations.
Visitors go from courtyard to courtyard, tasting the wines of individual producers and getting into conversation with the winemaking families. This personal level is the heart of the festival: Instead of anonymous serving, the winemakers serve themselves, talk about their vineyards, their season, and their philosophy. Riesling, Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Rosé, and Spätburgunder form the classic Rheinhessen spectrum.
Each courtyard has its own culinary offering. Some focus on Rheinhessen classics like Spundekäs, Handkäs mit Musik, and Bratwurst, while others offer Flammkuchen, tapas, pasta, or Mediterranean variations. This diversity creates a culinary journey of discovery through the community.
Several stages in the courtyards and central locations provide musical accompaniment: Acoustic sets during the day, jazz, singer-songwriters, and smaller bands in the evening. The intimate atmosphere of the courtyards makes the music particularly impactful.
The quality seal EXCELLENT Wine Festival Rheinhessen confirms the high standard: high-quality wines, careful culinary offerings, a well-maintained atmosphere, and a dense supporting program. The Harxheim Hofenfest is a must-attend event for anyone who wants to experience Rheinhessen wine culture in its most original form.
The 2026 edition marks the 46th iteration of the festival. The proven concept of decentralized service in the winemakers' courtyards, supplementary club stalls, diverse culinary offerings, and musical accompaniment will be continued.
The exact program and the list of participating courtyards for 2026 will be published by the HVV Harxheim in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
