Annual Palatinate Kerwe in the Bad Dürkheim district of Hardenburg at the foot of the castle ruins of the same name
The Hardenburg castle ruins are among the most significant and best-preserved castle ruins in the Palatinate. Built in the 13th century as the seat of the Counts of Leiningen, Hardenburg was one of the most important centers of power in the region for centuries. In 1689, the castle was destroyed by French troops during the War of the Palatinate Succession and has remained a ruin ever since. Today, Hardenburg is a popular excursion destination with a museum and is managed by the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage of Rhineland-Palatinate. The ruins impressively tower over the district of the same name and are easily accessible on foot in a few minutes.
The Hardenburg Kerwe takes advantage of its unique location at the foot of the castle ruins, offering one of the most atmospherically charming Kerwe festivals in the Palatinate. During the festival weekend, the district transforms into a festive mile with wine and catering stands, a live stage, and a festive atmosphere. The castle ruins above the village, often particularly impressive in the evening light, provide a backdrop that no other Palatinate Kerwe event can offer.
The festival program follows the classic Palatinate Kerwe structure: Friday evening opening with a keg tapping ceremony and the first concert evening, Saturday the most exuberant day with a big concert on the main stage, Sunday family day with a morning pint, lunch, and a relaxed end to the festival. At the wine stands, vintners from Hardenburg and Bad Dürkheim serve their own wines – dry Rieslings, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Dornfelder. Palatinate specialties such as Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Bratwürste (sausages), and Sauerkraut complete the culinary offerings.
Visitors to the Kerwe can ideally combine their visit with a climb to the castle ruins. The walk from the village center to the castle takes about 15 to 20 minutes on foot and offers spectacular views of the district and the Isenach valley time and again. The castle ruins themselves can be visited, with a museum detailing the history of the Leiningen family and the region.
