Overview

The 25th edition of the Grand Chinese New Year Concert took place in early 2025 at the Elbphilharmonie – just in time for the start of the Chinese New Year. The traditional Chinese orchestra, under the direction of its conductor, presented a program of festive overtures, traditional solo passages for Pipa and Erhu, and works by contemporary Chinese composers. Organizers: Music From China and Hamburger China-Gesellschaft e.V.

The 2025 edition continued the established tradition. Since 2001, the format has been held annually in several European capitals, with Hamburg as a permanent German stop. The Hamburg edition benefits from the historic partnership between Hamburg and Shanghai – the two cities have been official partner cities since 1986; 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the partnership.

Since its opening in 2017, the Elbphilharmonie has become the premier venue for sophisticated international classical music programs in the state of Hamburg. With over 2,100 seats in the Grand Hall and top-tier acoustics, it offers a fitting setting for an orchestral program of this magnitude.
