Overview

The 74th edition took place in November 2025 in Mannheim and Heidelberg with the usual program of the "ON THE RISE!" competition, talent program, and streaming service. Around 60 international first and second films were shown, many as world or European premieres. In 2025, the festival once again confirmed its position as Germany's second-oldest film festival and an important platform for discovering young directorial voices.

74th Edition — Preparing for the Anniversary

The 2025 edition was overshadowed by preparations for the 75th anniversary in 2026. Nevertheless, the festival presented its proven program: around 60 films, a competition for first and second films, the Talent Camp, and the Young Jury composed of students from Baden-Württemberg universities.

The film screenings were spread across venues in both cities — in Mannheim at Cinema Quadrat and Stadthaus N1, in Heidelberg at Karlstorkino and in venues in the Old Town. The streaming service, introduced in 2024, reached a significantly wider audience outside the Rhine-Neckar region in 2025. The festival management announced the "Imagine Futures" special campaign and a retrospective for 2026.
