Family festival for German Mill Day at the historic Sudweyher Watermill in the municipality of Weyhe
German Mill Day has been proclaimed on Whit Monday since 1994 by the German Society for Mill Science and Preservation. More than a thousand historic wind and watermills open their doors nationwide on this day, making the miller's craft and mill culture tangible. In the Diepholz district, several mills are among the event locations, including the Sudweyher Watermill, one of the oldest mills in the municipality of Weyhe.
A lively festival site springs up around the Sudweyher Watermill on Whit Monday. Stages are set up on the meadow at Mühlengrund, walk-acts mingle with the crowds, a puppet theater performs for the little ones, and at a mosaic crafting station, guests of all ages can create their own works. Concerts with pianist Henning Pertiet and the band Moving Souls give the day its musical profile, creating an interplay between quiet acoustic moments and rousing live rhythms.
The Sudweyher Watermill is one of the most important industrial monuments in the municipality of Weyhe. It has been elaborately restored by the support association and the municipality and now serves as a demonstration mill, event venue, and cultural calling card. On Mill Day, the mill's technology can be experienced live in action, and knowledgeable members explain the functionality and history of the water-powered plant.
Admission to the family festival on Mill Day is traditionally free. With this, the municipality of Weyhe, together with its supporters, sends a signal for open cultural events that appeal to all generations and allow families to enjoy a carefree festival day.
In mostly mild early summer weather, the grounds at Mühlengrund transform into a stage for encounters, music, and participatory culture. Families, mill enthusiasts, and day-trippers from the Bremen region gather on the Hache river to enjoy a program that combines tradition and contemporary culture.
With the Sudweyher Watermill as a historic backdrop, a special setting is created where children can also playfully learn how grinding works with water power.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the municipality of Weyhe in spring on weyhe.de and in the local press.
