Overview

The Lichtmessmarkt 2025 took place as usual around Candlemas on Erlangen's Schlossplatz. Eight days of market with household items, textiles, spices, food stalls, and rides for children. The centuries-old tradition (founded in 1694 by Margrave Christian Ernst) is one of the oldest of its kind in Franconia and remains a firm fixture in Erlangen's city life during winter.

The 2025 edition seamlessly continued over three centuries of market tradition. Exhibitors from Franconia and all over Southern Germany offered their classic assortment, while Franconian snack stands provided refreshments. In the cold February weather, the market attracted mainly Erlangen families and seniors, and students from the Friedrich Alexander University in the evenings.

The Lichtmessmarkt is an example of how a traditional necessity market can remain vibrant in the 21st century — through a loyal customer base, a clearly defined assortment, and its central location on the most representative square of Erlangen's new town.
