Overview

The 2025 dokumentarfilmwoche took place in mid-April in Hamburg. Around 50 films and events, international filmmakers, curated series, and Q&A sessions in five venues. The festival once again confirmed its reputation as a carefully curated destination for ambitious documentary film in the German-speaking world.

The 2025 edition continued the festival's established course: no red carpet format, but a forum for aesthetically and politically demanding documentary films from around the world. Screenings took place in the four art-house cinemas Metropolis, 3001, B-Movie, and Slot-Clubkino. The festival center fux eG in Altona provided space for talks, a bar, and informal exchange between films.

The program included premieres, retrospectives, and curated series. The filmmakers came from the Global South, Europe, and conflict regions — a programmatic line that has shaped the festival for years. The Q&A sessions were, as always, a highlight: not a prepared marketing talk, but real discussions between directors and the audience.
