In May 2025, preparatory club activities and smaller balloon launches by the Augsburg Free Balloon Club took place — as a prelude to the major 125th-anniversary celebration in 2026 with the German Championship in Gersthofen. The German Gas Balloon Championship itself is not traditionally held in Gersthofen every year but alternates between the locations of the German free balloon clubs.
In 2025, there was no regular German Gas Balloon Championship held in Gersthofen — the championship traditionally alternates between the locations of the German free balloon clubs and was held at a different location in 2025.
The Augsburg Free Balloon Club used 2025 for the preparations for its 125th anniversary in 2026 — with club launches, training flights, and organizational planning for the 2026 German Championship in Gersthofen.
With the Gas Balloon Championship and Balloon Museum Cup scheduled for May 2026, the club is setting a sporting and representative highlight for its 125th anniversary. Several thousand spectators from the region and all over Germany are expected for the upcoming 2026 event.
