Overview

During Advent 2025, the traditional Buttnmandl and Kramperl custom also took place in Bischofswiesen: on Advent Sundays in the districts of Loipl and Winkl, and in early December in the main town, accompanied by the public Bundeswehr St. Nicholas parade of the Gebirgsjäger. Buttnmandl clad in straw and Kramperl covered in fur paraded with St. Nicholas through the villages.

The Buttnmandllaufen is an annual Advent custom in the Berchtesgaden region. In 2025, Bischofswiesen followed the established pattern: runs on Advent Sundays in Loipl and Winkl, in early December in the main town, and on Christmas Eve in Maria Gern.

The public Bundeswehr St. Nicholas parade by the "Struber Jäger" – a fixture since 1962 – led St. Nicholas, Buttnmandl, Kramperl, Knecht Ruprecht, and angels through the town. With the rattling of heavy bells ("Buttn"), the straw-clad figures kept the ancient custom alive and set the mood for locals and visitors alike for the Berchtesgaden Advent.

Prices

Public parade free of charge; Buttnmandllaufen primarily a private house-visiting custom.
