An Island Tells Its Whaling Story
Borkum was a centre of German whaling in the North Sea in the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. This history gave rise to the island musical „Up de Walvis”, which the Borkum Traditional Costume Group has been staging for years. The musical tells of the whalers' departure, the long journeys, of hope, risk, and loss, and of the lives of the families left behind on the island.
Production with Traditional Costumes, Dances, and Shanties
Characteristic of the production are the authentic traditional costumes of the costume group, the Low German texts, the shanty songs, and the typical Frisian dances. The musical is performed at the Kulturinsel Borkum, one of the island's central stages. Performances begin at 8:00 PM and offer a full evening's stage programme.
Supporting Association
The Borkum Traditional Costume Group supports the musical as an association project with a clear connection to the identity of the islanders. The performances are a mix of a local cultural evening, a cultural event, and a tourist offering. Islanders and guests alike will find a format here that brings the island's maritime history to life.
