Summer town and wine festival in the historic Freinsheim old town on the first weekend of June
Freinsheim has a unique feature among Palatinate wine villages: a completely preserved medieval town wall. It encloses the historic old town, making it a cohesive ensemble of half-timbered houses, baroque townhouses, and narrow alleys. When the Altstadtfest begins on the first weekend of June, this setting becomes the ideal stage for a typical Palatinate town and wine festival.
The Altstadtfest spans four days, from Thursday to Sunday. Freinsheim vintners, clubs, and restaurateurs set up their stalls along the central main street, at the market square, Rathausplatz, and in the side alleys. Visitors can wander from one stall to the next, sampling the Palatinate's wine culture and cuisine.
The focus is on the wines of Freinsheim vintners – the mineral Rieslings from central vineyards, fresh Pinot Blanc, fruity Rosé wines, and sparkling wine. Palatinate specialties such as Saumagen, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, Flammkuchen, Palatinate sausage salad, and Schorle are standard fare. Vegetarian and vegan alternatives are available, as are sweets and ice cream for younger guests.
In the evenings, bands play on various stages – cover bands, acoustic sets, DJ programs. During the day, brass ensembles, choirs, and family activities provide entertainment. The Altstadtfest is family-friendly: stalls with children's activities, play areas, and the manageable, safe festival grounds make the event attractive even for families with young children.
The 2026 edition follows the traditional structure: Thursday opening in the late afternoon, continuous festivities on Friday, full operation on Saturday with the main stage program, and a morning pint on Sunday. Stalls of Freinsheim vintners and clubs are spread across the central squares and alleys of the old town.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
Specific bands, times, and special events will be announced by the City of Freinsheim before the festival begins.
