One-day city festival in the historic old town below the Grafenschloss castle
Diez is a town of just under 11,000 inhabitants in the Rhein-Lahn district, located directly on the Lahn river — opposite Limburg an der Lahn, which belongs to the neighboring region in Hesse. The old town lies at the foot of the striking Grafenschloss Diez, which towers over the Lahn on a rocky spur and shapes the cityscape. Narrow alleys, half-timbered buildings, a small market square, and the collegiate church form the historic core.
The Altstadtfest uses this backdrop for a one-day summer festival. Unlike multi-day folk festivals (Volksfeste), Diez focuses on a single, intensive day of celebration — a variant that is popular in Rhineland-Palatinate for many small towns because it remains manageable in terms of organization while still allowing for high visitor numbers.
Local and regional bands play all day long on two stages in the old town. Stylistically, the range is typical for summer city festivals: cover bands with rock and pop classics, acoustic duos, singer-songwriters, often DJ sets or a party band in the evening that turns the market square into a dance floor. Local caterers and clubs — sports, fire brigade, carnival (Karneval), shooting clubs (Schützen) — operate stalls and festival tents with classic summer festival offerings: Bratwurst, Spießbraten, fries, Flammkuchen, Pfälzer Saumagen, or Hessian specialties, draft beer, regional wines, cocktails.
The Lahn river, flowing directly past the old town, adds to the festival's character — occasionally, smaller events are held on the water (boats, lights), and the promenade along the Lahn invites a leisurely stroll.
The 2026 festival continues the one-day concept. With its summer date and atmospheric location along the Lahn river, the event is an important date in the Diez event calendar.
The exact program for 2026 (bands, set times, special events) will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: two stages with a staggered daily program, continuous club stalls, and an evening highlight with a party band or DJ.
