Classic town festival with music, flea market, and festive atmosphere in the historic old town
Bad Gandersheim, the birthplace of the medieval poet Roswitha von Gandersheim, presents itself in a convivial manner during the Altstadtfest. The historic old town with its half-timbered houses and the nearby collegiate church provides the ideal setting for a town festival characterized by tradition and a relaxed festive atmosphere.
The Altstadtfest traditionally takes place on the first weekend of September — Friday and Saturday form the two festival days. This timing allows for the optimal transition from summer to early autumn and is usually favorable in terms of climate.
Various bands and solo artists provide musical entertainment throughout the festival days. The range extends from pop and rock to Schlager and oldies, as well as regional folk bands. Several stages or performance venues are spread throughout the old town, ensuring that the festival activities are distributed across the entire city center.
A traditional flea market is part of the Altstadtfest. Private individuals and commercial vendors present antiques, bric-a-brac, collectibles, and curiosities. Those who enjoy browsing and hunting for bargains will find many opportunities here.
Snack stands, food trucks, and restaurateurs from the region offer guests a wide range of food options. Bratwurst, fries, crêpes, cakes, and regional specialties are included. Beer stands, wine stalls, and non-alcoholic drinks complete the offerings. The warm-hearted atmosphere of a spa town tradition shapes the festive character.
The 2026 edition of the Altstadtfest continues the tradition of one of the most beautiful town festivals in Southern Lower Saxony. In the historic old town with its collegiate church and half-timbered houses, the festival unfolds its special charm.
The location in the Roswitha-Stadt connects the town festival with the Roswitha Festival Year 2026 — an additional cultural highlight.
