Edition 2025 — Altona macht auf!
The 2025 edition of Altona macht auf! took place over two evenings in June 2025 in the Altona-Altstadt and Ottensen districts, as usual. Residents transformed windows and balconies into small stages, and the audience strolled through the streets discovering the performances. Organiser: theater altonale, Artistic Director Tania Lauenburg, in collaboration with Carsten Brandau. Funded by the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and the Altona District Office.
The 2025 edition continued the tradition established in 2012. The format remains one of Hamburg's most unique theatre concepts: no stage, no admission fee, no traditional actors, but an entire neighbourhood as a performance space. Over the years, "Altona macht auf!" has become a fixture of Hamburg's summer culture – nestled between the large-scale events like Hafengeburtstag, Elbjazz, and Reeperbahn Festival, it is the quietest and most intimate summer format in the state of Hamburg.
In terms of content, the 2025 performances once again revolved around themes such as longing, community, shared spaces, and peace – the guiding principles of the project since its inception.
